Stakeholders potentially affected by EPA’s January proposal for a three-year phase-out of food tolerances for ProFume have until April 19 to let the Agency know why they need the product and how their operations would be affected if EPA decided that it would no longer be available.

EPA has not yet decided what action it will take on its proposal, and the Agency has said that it will evaluate the stakeholder input received during its  public comment period (which opened February 19, 2011) before taking any final action.

This means that ProFume can continue to be used today as labeled.

EPA’s phase-out proposal for ProFume stems from recent government concerns that some segments of the U.S. population may be receiving too much exposure to fluoride, which is intentionally added to toothpaste and water supplies for dental hygiene purposes.

EPA acknowledges that its proposal is due to its interpretation of the requirements of U.S. law and the threat of activist litigation and that:

1)  ProFume makes a negligible contribution to public fluoride exposure,

2)  There are no readily available substitutes for ProFume for critical sectors of the food industry and that

3)  Elimination of these food tolerances would not resolve – or even significantly reduce – the Agency’s fluoride exposure concerns.

Dow AgroSciences is in active opposition to EPA’s proposal and has said that it will continue to work with government toward a resolution of this issue that more clearly reflects the needs of the food industry and our nation’s needs for a safe and sustainable food supply.
